Born again christians actually have a higher rate of divorce than the general public. Dave then talks about how faithfulness can be so difficult.

Dave closes out the One Life series by discussing our "emotional lives." Somehow, we think of being emotional or showing emotion to be negative some how, but even Jesus showed great emotion. Dave talks about several of those instances.

Joe Boyd brings the One Life series around to look at our Relational lives. Are we hospitable or hostile or indifferent people?

Joe Boyd teaches about our "inner", spiritual life and what it means to follow Christ. He explains the concepts of Intimacy, Community, and Ministry, and how we need to put intimacy first, to be effective for the kingdom. He goes on to list 6 of Jesus' "Heart" principles. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. I Samuel 16:7b (NIV)

As proof that Dave Workman will do anything for the kingdom, he goes through a medical physical to kick off this weeks One Life topic: Physical life. He also shares the deep spiritual classic "Frog and Toad Together"

Similar to the “12th step” of AA, once we are a disciple of Jesus we exist to help others find the joy we have found in following him. We lead others through the Path and are blessed to have God use as servant leaders for those coming behind us.

Charlie Hines and Jim Zartman wrote a special song for this series entitled Seven Miles from Jerusalem.

We move from intimacy to community to ministry. Once we know God and others we are compelled to serve our world. We come to God with open hands, holding our possessions, time and dreams up to God for him to redirect for his purposes.

God made us to be in community with others. Within the context of a group of people we experience the disciplines of community and create space to obey all of the “one another” commands in the New Testament.

The Bible is a trustworthy gift given to us to show us the heart of God and practices of his people. The classic disciplines of study and meditation create space for God to form us into his followers

As with any relationship, just being present with a person is key. Communication is the next step. In prayer we create space to be with God, talk to him and receive from him.

A call to follow Jesus and acknowledge that he has been walking beside us all along. A commitment to walk with him for a lifetime, starting by committing to come back for the next six weeks to learn what it means to be a disciple.

Having a basic understanding of how to articulate the gospel message or share your story. We have the opportunity to share with folks the keys to the Kingdom; Sean sometimes uses the example of Oprah giving away keys to cars; you can guarantee those people told everyone about receiving a free car; we’ve received a gift far greater… why not be eager to let others know how to get the same gift for free? This isn’t selling, it’s sharing our excitement. We must simply understand the nature of what we’ve been given so we can tell others when the time is right.

Taking next steps with people through friendship and listening; learning to go deeper with the folks in our world and becoming comfortable w/spiritual conversations as a natural expression of our love and care for others.

Moving beyond casual interaction and earning the right to be heard. Demonstrating the kindness of God to those who are far from God; living a life so different that people begin to wonder what motivates you; changing perception of Christianity & the church. Matthew 19:41 “what must I do to have eternal life” & Matthew 5:41, 2nd mile living. People are driven to ask about our faith when we live life differently & do things out of the norm. It’s why SE is so powerful.

Joe Boyd Speaks: (Matthew 19:19)We’re asked to “Go, Make, Baptize” and do it because we love our neighbors. The Great Commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves was offered as an answer to the direct question about how to have eternal life. And the Great Commission was Jesus’ farewell address about how to carry on the work he started with the hope that we would do even greater things than he did. These clear instructions from Jesus tell us what to do (go, make, baptize), why to do it (we love as we have been loved), and that we will have God’s help in doing it (“I will be with you always…”). In this week, we’re introducing the nature of whichever theme has been chosen and setting the stage.

Baptism Weekend

Dave talks about the upside-down value system of the Kingdom of God. And answers some hard questions.
The life of Jesus. Why did He choose to serve rather that be served?
Why is surrender/ sacrifice so unpopular in the Kingdom of the world?
What actions are required on our part to reverse the need to focus on self?
How/ why do we move from seeker to reproducer?

This week will build a framework as to the role that serving plays in our spiritual maturity. We define spiritual maturity as “Movement toward Christ-likeness”. That trajectory has 2 inseparable components – Input (knowledge, disciplines, community, etc) and output (tasking, serving the needs of others by doing).

How do we walk out Luke 4 values?

Gideon was given a new job (revolutionary and soldier) with no training. He was promoted to Israel’s general with no experience. God trims his army to next to nothing and tells him to attack a world power.

Application on being called to a task that is beyond our own ability to do well. With God there is no fear of the future or fear of failure.

Joshua inherits a frustrated, moody, homeless nation on the brink of war against a stronger foe. Moses is dead. God’s directives to him are risky – maybe ridiculous. Cross the Jordan and then circumcise all the soldiers, etc. “Be strong and courageous” is a life theme of Joshua.

The application piece focuses on how we trust God to overcome our fears based in the seemingly impossible challenges that we are facing.

Dave intros the Fearless Series by discussing Moses
Focusing primarily on his call at the burning bush. By that time Moses was an old man, a criminal, a foreigner…he was a failure. He also had either real or perceived personal hang-ups (thus God sending Aaron).

The application piece focuses on how we trust God to overcome our fears based in our own past failures, hang-ups and flaws.

Dave Workman had a special end of the year message where he talked about the top 3 cool things VCC did and the top 3 things he screwed up. He will have the Top 10 lists on his BlogSpot .

Behind the scenes we see Joseph, quietly obeying God’s leadership and sovereign hand. He responds to God through doing the right thing, even though he has very little (seemingly) to gain.

The main focus of this week: God asks us to respond to him, many times, through simple obedience. When we lack understanding or our feelings fail, we can fall back on doing the right thing as best as we know how – and God will be pleased with our obedience.

Other main focus: worship can look like obedience.

Next Step: How can we better respond in obedience to God, even when we don’t see him working?

God leads the Wise Men from a different land, a different culture, to submit their rule to an infant Jewish boy, Jesus. They don’t even know what they are following. And they bring expensive gifts as a sign of their appreciation.

The main focus of this week: God calls us to a journey of many unknowns. Many times, we don’t’ even know what we responding to (fully), but yet we still respond. Also, this journey also requires us to make sacrifices – sometimes very costly sacrifices.

Other main focus: worship can look like a sacrifice.

God again works through the marginalized of Jewish society – the Shepherds. They respond by announcing the “good news” of the Messiah.

The main focus of this week: God wants to make his name famous. We help him do that when we acknowledge his active will in our lives, the fulfillment of his promises, etc. Something happens when take our eyes off our situation and announce who God is, what he has done, etc.

Other main focus: worship can look like announcing the things that God has done.

God comes to a seemingly insignificant member of the Jewish society – Mary – to start this new epoch of human existence. Mary responds with poetry – typical of Jewish culture.

The main focus of this week: God loves the marginalized. Mary responds with all that she has to give – which isn’t a lavish sacrifice, a well-spoken sermon, etc., but instead a song from her heart.

We all have a voice. We all have thoughts. We all have the freedom of expression. And we can give that to God through an act of worship, as a response to who he his.
