Barb Lownsbury to teach on The Dented Fender

Kristi Jacobsen | September 12, 2018

Barbara Lownsbury is a speaker, author, entrepreneur and single mother of three. She is teaching one of our Women’s Community classes this fall at Vineyard Cincinnati Church, so let’s get to know her better!

How did you get connected at the Vineyard?

I was going through a hard season in my life. While I loved my previous church, it was smaller and no one there could really relate to what I was going through. My minister recommended I try out Vineyard. I remember sitting through a sermon, looking around, and feeling like I was home. I have been coming here and volunteering ever since.

You’re doing a study called the Dented Fender during Women's Community this fall. Can you tell us the meaning behind the name?

My son begged to borrow my new car for his date. As I hesitantly handed him the keys, he bolted out the door with my warning still ringing in his ears: "Don't do anything to my new car!" I'm sure you can guess the rest.

Ironically, I have come to see that dent as a symbol for a lot of powerful life lessons. Despite the fact that my life has suffered some serious blows, those blows do not define me -- just as that dent doesn't define me. I am greater than my circumstances, greater than my trials because I am a child of God. He has taken those dark, ugly moments and used them to transform me into something stronger, something better. He allows me to shine even brighter. And I believe He can do that for each of us, which is what this ministry is about.

What are women going to learn?

Some great biblical principles and practical tools they can use to help them move forward when they're feeling stuck on their spiritual journey. This class is designed to help each woman wade through her situation with God to find the answers He has for her as opposed to just doing what seems best. I have found God does a much better job of it than we ever can. And once you’re moving forward, these principles help you to keep moving.

Talk a little about the mission of your ministry.

It's about helping people learn to connect to God in a deep, meaningful way during times of challenge. I think God's love is most misunderstood in times of trial amongst churched and unchurched people alike. We can feel like He has left us behind in the dust, we feel angry and frustrated and we can't seem to hear His voice. Our goal is to help people find the incredible depth and care of God's love in the midst of their storm so they can emerge better and richer for the process.

What do you like to do for fun?

Lots of things! I love the outdoors, playing volleyball, skiing, paddle boarding, music, travel, volunteering -- too much to list! But probably my favorite thing to do is sit around with great friends over a nice meal and enjoy each other's company. I love the people I have the privilege of doing life with, so getting time with them is always the best!
