Good News for Your Friday

Jennifer Shock | May 7, 2021

Years ago, my mom and I started this silly little custom, about the days of the week. We used to talk every day, and on whatever day it was when we were talking, we’d sign off with a bit of alliteration, like “have a marvelous Monday!” Or, “have a terrific Tuesday!” You get the idea.

Our favorite, of course, was when we got to say “Have a fabulous Friday!” Back when my girls were in preschool just a few days a week, we’d celebrate “free Friday, fun Friday!” Fabulous, fantastic, free, fun — those are all good words, great descriptors. But there’s more than that for us, on any day of the week.

We can be fortified by the strength of God our Father. We can flourish because of the victory we have in Jesus. We can daily be filled by the Holy Spirit.

I’ve been thinking about some things we know about God that are true on any and every day of the week and might encourage us on this first Friday of May.

God is Our Loving Father.
Here’s one, maybe the best, maybe the most comforting one: God is our loving FATHER. I don’t know about you, but when I feel anxious or afraid, I want to know there is someone taking care of me, someone I can trust absolutely, someone who knows my needs and protects me. That’s God, my heavenly Father. I can close my eyes, picture myself climbing up into His lap, where I am safe. A father takes care of His children. And I know and trust that God is absolutely going to take care of me.

God is a Firm Foundation.
God is our Father, and He is a FIRM FOUNDATION. Jesus is the solid Rock on which we stand. We have been weathering some significant storms. But those of us who have put our faith in Jesus have built our houses on the rock, and we will not be shaken.

In Matthew 7, Jesus says, Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.”

We are not going to fall, friends; our houses are not going to fall. He is our firm foundation, the same today as He was yesterday and as He will be tomorrow.

God is Faithful.
Finally, on this Friday, God is FAITHFUL! That’s who He is! I love that in 2 Timothy where we are reminded, “If we are faithless, he remains faithful - for he cannot deny himself.” It’s impossible for God not to be faithful.

This is good news today. He is faithful to sustain His people. He is faithful to work all things to the good and for the glory of His name. When we’re walking through fire, and then on the other side of the fire, we will surely see the marks of our God’s faithfulness and we will praise Him.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend ahead, savor your Saturday and Sunday. May you be blessed and remember we are His children and walk in His favor, not because of who we are but because of who He is. Hope to see you in person or online for weekend services. — Jennifer Shock
