Why Do I Serve at the Vineyard?

Jake Miller | December 15, 2020

We recently asked Jake Miller of the Vineyard Cincinnati worship band, why do you serve?

"It gives me a sense of purpose. Facilitating worship for others makes me feel like I'm following God's will and doing His work."

What's your serving role?
Playing keys in the main worship service, MD'ing (music directing), and occasionally playing other instruments.

What do you like best about serving in this way?
I like the community the most; some of my closest friends have come from the band. I also love playing music and worshiping. So, it's a joy getting to do that with good friends who are talented musicians and singers.

Do you have a story about how you got started in this serving role?
My wife happened to see one of the main service worship leaders at SOS, introduced herself and said, “my husband is a musician...are there any opportunities?” and that got the ball rolling. I’ve been serving since then.

How has serving others impacted your life?
It gives me a sense of purpose. Facilitating worship for others makes me feel like I'm following God's will and doing His work. I had a fresh appreciation of this after we got back to in-person worship after a couple months of online only. On stage I can look out and witness people worshiping, and I can feel a connection with the body of believers.
